Information and Privacy Commissioner (IPC) of Prince Edward Island

The IPC is an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly, appointed for a five-year term, combining access-to-information and privacy oversight in a single office. The Commissioner promotes public access to information and protection of privacy, reviews requests for information-access reviews and privacy complaints, investigates actions and decisions of public bodies and health custodians, and — where a matter cannot be resolved by settlement — has authority to make findings, recommendations, or orders.

Laws and regulations administered:

• Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPP), RSPEI 1988, c F-15.01 — governs access to records and personal information handling by public bodies, together with its General Regulations.
• Health Information Act (HIA), RSPEI 1988, c H-1.41 — governs personal health information, together with its Health Information Regulations.

PEI has no private-sector equivalent to BC's or Alberta's PIPA; PIPEDA applies to the province's private sector by default.

• No currently proposed or pending PEI privacy- or AI-specific bill has been identified as of this page's last update. FOIPP and its regulations received minor amendments in 2025–2026 (affecting, among other things, the definition of "trade secret"), but no substantive reform package or AI-specific legislation is before the Legislative Assembly.
